Articles are the three words 'the', 'a', 'an'. 'The' is a definite article and is placed before an object
'The apple, ...'
'The computer ...'
etc.
and 'a' and 'an' are indefinite articles and are used in a more general way
'She used a computer' (a general use rather than she used the computer a specific use).
'An' is usually used before a vowel, e.g. 'I ate a pear', but 'I ate an apple' and 'a' in front of a consonant. However, the use of 'an' depends upon the pronunciation, not always the spelling. If the word sounds like it starts with a vowel, e.g. 'hour' sounds like it starts with 'o' the 'h' is silent, then we use 'an', i.e. 'an hour' not 'a hour'.
