Introduction

Using correct grammar means

  • being able to write clearly
  • making a good impression
  • understanding more about language and communication.

We are all supposed to instinctively "know" grammar rules. However we get into the habit of using spoken grammar, which is informal and unstructured, and sometimes this transfers over to writing.  We are judged on our writing - particularly at university - but all through our professional lives people will make assumptions about our background and culture and education.  For this reason it's important to get it right.

  • Parts of speech
  • How grammar is relevant to formal academic writing

The important thing is to write something rather than writing nothing because you are afraid of making a mistake. Write as naturally as you can - it will be easier and will be the natural base from which your tutors can help you improve.
