APPENDIX/APPENDICES:

An appendix or in the plural appendices is the heading for a section at the back of the essay following the bibliography. It is used to include any relevant but extensive material which would interrupt the writing of the main part of the essay or dissertation etc.

Typical items for the Appendices are:

  • A sample questionnaire used for a survey
  • Sample of a completed questionnaire
  • Visual summaries of findings when these are extensive
  • Other relevant material

Remember that Appendices like everything else in a piece of writing require page numbers. If you are unable to word process the page numbers of your appendices, you must write them in by hand. Page numbers are ESSENTIAL!

If there are several appendices, it is usual to include a list on the Contents page and possibly again at the beginning of the Appendices if you wish. Including either of these may be determined by your supervisor or dissertation unit guide.
