Depending on the length, a contents page is usually helpful. For a piece of 500 words it may not be needed, but is usually helpful for 1000 words and more.  A contents page has the headings Contents and Pages and then lists the sections with the relevant page numbers. This is more usual for writing which includes numbered headings. Typical headings for a Contents page for an essay are:

  1. Introduction
  2. Etc. (body)
  3. ...
  4. ...
  5. Conclusion
  6. Bibliography

See the following example.

List of figures
For longer pieces of writing for example projects and dissertations you may need to include a List of figures if you have several illustrations or visuals,

(see COMMUNICATION > Visuals)

List them as Figure 1, Figure 2 etc. plus the page number.

Appendix/appendices
If you have more than one Appendix that is Appendices, you will need a list of them. You may choose to add this to the Contents page, or have it separate. You may also choose to repeat the list of appendices at the beginning of the Appendices section to help the reader. Again page numbers are the essential item so that the reader can easily find information.
