The literature review is typically part of a dissertation although to some extent most pieces of academic writing include some element of literature review. It means to give a survey or overview of what has been written about your particular topic, as far as you have been able to find out. The scope and extent of the literature review will be dependent on the nature of both the topic and the subject area involved.
