CLASSIFICATION:

Classifying is another element commonly found in descriptive writing. Classification of something into:

  • groups
  • categories
  • classes, etc.

is made according to a criterion or criteria (standards or principles on which judgements are based), e.g.

  • Mammals can be divided into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores (according to what they eat).

= three classes of mammals result from this division:

  • meat eaters
  • plant eaters
  • mammals that eat both

All mammals fall into one of these groups.
