Of course you can listen, many people can. But it is no good sitting back and relaxing hoping that you will 'soak up' the information. – To get the most out of the lecture you have to 'actively' listen.
Active listening
But what is 'active listening' – how do you do it?
Active listening is thinking about and analysing the information as you hear it – and then summarising it with a word or phrase. Analysing is about asking yourself questions as you listen to the lecture. Questions such as:
- What does this mean?
- Does this agree with what I've read?
- Do I agree with this?
- How did he/she arrive at that solution/conclusion?
- Could I apply this to my own problem or field/place of work?
And no, active listening is not easy; it is very tiring; and very easy to lose concentration – but it does get easier with practice, especially if you look out for 'keywords' and 'signposts'.
